Fabian Schär, The Centre Back Who Carries

He treats the back line as a launchpad rather than a place to sit, driving forward whenever space invites it.

Schär is the centre back most willing to leave his position and carry the ball into midfield himself. He trusts his passing range to find a teammate once he arrives there, and that willingness gives Newcastle an outlet nobody else in defence really offers. A long diagonal from him can switch the point of attack in a single pass rather than the several it would take through a more cautious defender sitting deep in his own half.

The same instinct explains why he sometimes gets caught upfield when possession turns over unexpectedly. A partner has to cover the space he vacates whenever he decides to gamble on a forward run. His effectiveness depends heavily on whoever plays alongside him reading the same moment he chooses to break forward from defence into midfield.
