Max Wilson, The Academy Captain Learning His Trade

Captain of Preston's academy side and scholar of the year, he is now finding how that promise holds up.

Wilson operates as a striker or an attacking midfielder just off a front man, versatility that made him an obvious choice to captain Preston's academy side. That same season also earned him their scholar of the year award. His leadership at youth level suggested a maturity beyond his years, the kind of trust a coaching staff rarely hands to a player who has not already shown he can influence a dressing room as well as a game.

Senior football has been a rougher introduction, with a loan spell in Ireland cut short by limited playing time. A move into non league football with Chorley then gave him a fresh chance to find his level. Whether the game intelligence that made him a natural leader among his own age group survives contact with senior professionals is the question his development now has to answer.
