Lee Nicholls, Preston's Team Of The Season Keeper

Named in the Championship's team of the season and the players' team of the year, he arrives with rare pedigree.

Nicholls worked his way up through a long list of loan clubs before Milton Keynes Dons gave him a proper platform. He then turned Huddersfield Town's goal into one of the more reliable in the division, helping them reach a play off final along the way. His shot stopping and command of crosses earned recognition from the league itself and from his fellow professionals, a rare double few goalkeepers manage in the same year.

That pedigree makes him a serious addition between the posts rather than simple cover. The interesting question at Preston is competition rather than certainty, since a goalkeeper with his honours joins a club that already trusted its previous number one. How a manager balances two capable goalkeepers, and how Nicholls responds to genuinely fighting for his shirt again, will shape how his spell there is remembered.
