Brad Potts, The Utility Man Preston Still Trust

A club record signing who became a utility player, filling whichever midfield or wing back role Preston have needed.

Potts built his career the traditional way, coming through Newcastle United's academy before senior football at Carlisle United and Blackpool. He scored in a League Two play off final that helped define his early reputation as a player for the big occasion. Barnsley gave him a platform in the Championship before Preston paid a club record fee to sign him, a deal that asked him to become a genuinely reliable presence rather than a one off matchwinner.

Years on, that versatility across central midfield and wing back is exactly what has kept him valuable, even as younger players have arrived. The fee that once defined him has long since faded from conversation around the club. The question with any long serving utility player is whether a club eventually takes that flexibility for granted, and whether Potts still gets the credit his consistency has quietly earned.
