Thierry Small, The Wonderkid Rebuilt At Charlton

He turned down a professional contract at Everton as a teenager, rebuilding his reputation through Southampton, Port Vale and Charlton.

Small can strike a ball cleanly from deep and covers ground relentlessly down the left, versatile enough to play centre back or out on the left wing when a manager needs it. It is at full back and wing back where his attacking stamina shows up most. He broke through at Everton so early that he became their youngest ever player, then made the bold call to leave rather than accept limited first team chances there.

That decision sent him on a winding path through Southampton, Port Vale and two spells in Scotland before he finally settled at Charlton Athletic. He helped them win promotion through the play offs, and Preston handed him a lengthy deal on the back of that form. Whether it was the platform for a proper Championship career, or simply his best moment yet, is the question fans are waiting to see answered.
