Matty Jacob, The Local Boy At Left Back

A defender whose family has been connected to this football club across two generations and several divisions.

Jacob waited a long time for his chance and took it immediately, scoring an equaliser in a cup tie in his first start and winning the club's player of the month award almost straight away. He is an orthodox left back rather than a converted winger, which means he defends the position first and gets forward when the situation actually invites it.

The step into the top flight is enormous for a player whose senior football has been almost entirely in the Championship, with a loan spell for extra minutes along the way. He will be marking wingers who cost more than the whole academy that produced him. What he has in his favour is that nobody in the ground wants him to succeed more than the people who watched him grow up.
