Sonny Carey, The Midfielder From Nowhere

He worked his way up from non league football to become a genuine goal threat in the Championship.

Carey's route into professional football sets him apart from most midfielders at this level, working his way up through non league sides before a Football League club gave him a chance. That background shows in his directness, a willingness to arrive late into the box and shoot rather than always looking for the extra pass. Supporters took to him quickly once he arrived at Charlton, drawn to a player who plays without the caution of someone protecting a reputation.

The question with a midfielder who scores goals from deep is whether that instinct survives once opponents start planning specifically to stop him. Defences that know a runner is coming can cut off the space he relies on far more easily than one caught by surprise. Whether Carey keeps finding that same freedom to arrive late is worth watching.
