Josh Edwards, The Defender Scotland Rated

He was named among the best defenders in Scottish football before making the step up to English football.

Edwards made his name in Scottish football as a defender other players and coaches rated highly, not as a wing back chasing assists. He reads the ball into wide areas early and gets across to block the cross rather than gambling on the tackle. That defensive discipline earned him representative recognition north of the border before Charlton moved for him, a rarer honour for a full back than it sounds.

What still needs answering is whether that discipline holds up against wingers with more raw pace and trickery than he faced in Scotland. A left back who defends first can look excellent against one type of winger and exposed against another, so the level of opponent changes the picture completely. Watching how comfortable he looks in one on one duels tells you plenty.
