Lloyd Jones, The Defender Who Rarely Misses

Charlton's vice captain has built his reputation on being the centre back who is always there, every single week.

Jones defends through discipline rather than raw physicality, holding his position and trusting his reading of the game instead of throwing himself into challenges he does not need to make. That approach has made him remarkably difficult to leave out, appearing for his club almost every single week regardless of opponent. Managers value a centre back who never seems to have an off day, more than one who produces occasional moments of brilliance instead.

Wearing the armband as vice captain says plenty about how the dressing room views him, someone whose standards do not drop even when results do. What separates the very best defenders from the merely reliable ones is often composure on the ball rather than positioning alone. That remains the part of his game worth watching most closely.
