Arthur Okonkwo, A Shot Stopper Who Craves Drama

He grew up idolising two very different goalkeepers and built a game around chasing the spectacular save.

Okonkwo came through Arsenal's academy from the age of eight, developing habits borrowed from Petr Cech and David De Gea, two goalkeepers who solved shot stopping in completely different ways. He has said the appeal of the position is making saves, the more spectacular the better. That instinct shows whenever a shot forces him into a full stretch dive rather than a routine gather.

Loan spells in England and in Austria, where he won a domestic cup, toughened him before he settled permanently between the posts. The bigger question is whether that love of the dramatic save ever pulls him out of position. A keeper who wants to fly across goal has to trust his early reads even more than one who is content simply to block the ball with his body.
