George Thomason, The Midfielder Who Started Left Back

A former manager once praised his positioning, vision and a wonderful left foot before Wrexham paid for all three.

Thomason spent his boyhood years at Blackpool playing left back before a coach at non league Longridge Town converted him into a central midfielder. It was a switch that shaped a game built more on reading passing lanes than simply covering ground. Bolton manager Ian Evatt later praised his positioning, vision and a wonderful left foot, qualities that earned him the club captaincy and a place in an EFL Trophy final his side went on to win.

Wrexham paid a serious fee to bring that same left foot into their own midfield, a clear vote of confidence in a player who has spent his career quietly upgrading his position. He never simply stuck with the one he was handed as a child. The obvious question is whether a midfielder shaped by lower league football can control games at Championship level the way he did further down the pyramid.
