Callum Burton, The Keeper Who Earned Wembley

He spent years as a backup before three saved penalties in a single shootout sent his team to Wembley itself.

Burton worked his way up from Shrewsbury Town's academy through a series of non league loans before finally establishing himself in the Football League with Hull City, Chesterfield and Cambridge United. His signature moment came at Plymouth Argyle, saving three consecutive penalties in an EFL Trophy shootout and sending the club to Wembley. It was the sort of performance that defines a career built mostly out of the spotlight.

He has since had to overcome a serious thigh injury, another obstacle in a path that has rarely been smooth for him. Burton has said himself that a goalkeeper who plays more games than he watches from the bench has had a decent career. It is a modest way of describing someone who keeps finding a route back into a matchday squad no matter how many times the door has closed on him.
