Conor Coventry, The Midfielder Who Screens

He spent years on loan learning to protect a back four before finally locking down a first team role.

Coventry's role is protective rather than expressive, sitting in front of the back four and cutting off the pass before an opponent can turn and run at goal. He came through West Ham's academy without ever nailing down a regular role there, then proved himself on loan at four different clubs before Charlton made his move permanent. That apprenticeship, learning the game outside a big academy, shaped a midfielder who understands exactly what his position requires.

The question now is whether he can add more to Charlton's play going forward, rather than simply protecting what is already there. A holding midfielder who only screens can become a passenger once his team needs to break down a stubborn defence. Whether Coventry adds a further passing dimension is the thing worth watching.
