Jacob Bruun Larsen, The Winger Who Also Defends

A wide player whose value comes from covering every blade of grass on his flank, not only the attacking half.

Bruun Larsen plays the flank the way a full back would prefer every winger played it, tracking runners and helping out defensively instead of treating his own half as somebody else's problem. When the ball turns over he sprints in behind rather than waiting for it, using direct running that stretches a defence in transition. That balance was recognised early with selection for the team of the tournament at a major European under 21 championship.

What still needs answering is whether a winger with this much defensive responsibility keeps enough in reserve to threaten going forward. Wide players who track back diligently sometimes arrive in the final third a beat too tired to make the decisive pass. Burnley need him to manage that balance rather than sacrifice one side for the other.
