Lucas Pires, The Full Back Built By Futsal

A defender whose comfort in tight spaces comes from a childhood spent playing futsal rather than the full sized game.

Pires spent his early years playing futsal, a version of football that rewards close control and quick decisions in almost no space, and that background still shows in how comfortably he receives the ball under pressure now. Where a lot of defenders want the ball played into space to run onto, he is happy taking it to feet with an opponent tight against him. That foundation lets him play out from the back under pressure rather than needing to clear the danger.

He made an immediate impact after moving to English football, setting up goals rather than just avoiding mistakes in his own third. The tension for a technically gifted full back is whether that comfort on the ball gets exposed against a winger built purely for physical duels. Pires has to prove futsal translates into defending as well as it clearly translates into passing.
