Ben Amos, The Keeper Who Started Outfield

A goalkeeper whose unusual route into the position left him fearless about claiming crosses and diving at forwards' feet.

Amos was a midfielder as a boy until an emergency in a youth match forced him into goal, and the performance was good enough to get him signed as a specialist keeper soon after. That accidental start seems to explain how he plays now, comfortable coming off his line to claim a cross rather than waiting on it, trusting his reflexes in one on ones most keepers would avoid. Coaches have praised his bravery as much as his shot stopping.

The obvious question for a keeper with his profile is whether that willingness to come for everything occasionally leaves his goal exposed. Bravery cuts both ways, and keepers remembered fondly are usually the ones whose calculated risks paid off more than they cost. Amos has built a long, steady career on getting that calculation right.
