Ashley Barnes, The Striker Nobody Enjoyed Marking

A combative forward whose career goal record proves that nuisance value alone can outscore far more gifted, better regarded strikers.

Barnes made a career out of being the striker nobody wanted to play against, needling defenders relentlessly and refusing to let a physical contest pass without getting involved. That combative streak occasionally spilled over into cards and controversy, but it also kept centre backs uncomfortable for the full ninety minutes rather than just the moments the ball was near him. He became one of the most prolific goal scorers in his club's Premier League history by relying on exactly that relentlessness.

Strikers built this way rarely get remembered as elegant, and Barnes never pretended to be anything other than effective. The tension is whether that same nuisance value still works against younger, sharper defenders as a career moves into its later stages. What never changed across all those years was the goals mattering more than the aesthetics ever did.
