Josh Cullen, The Midfielder Who Sets The Tempo

A holding midfielder whose passing range lets him control how quickly his team plays rather than where the ball goes.

Cullen anchors a midfield the way a metronome keeps time, receiving from the back four and deciding almost instantly whether the moment calls for a quick pass to keep tempo up or a slower one to let his team reset. That range, short and long, lets him control matches without needing to be the most eye catching player on the pitch. It is a role built on discipline rather than flair, which is exactly why it tends to get underrated.

His leadership qualities were obvious early, earning the captaincy at a previous club within a handful of appearances and again once he moved to England. What a deep lying midfielder like this always has to answer is whether he can dictate games against opponents who press him and refuse to let him settle. Cullen has built a career on doing exactly that.
