Bashir Humphreys, The Defender Still Learning Restraint

A young centre back with real athletic tools who has found out how quickly aggression turns into a costly mistake.

Humphreys defends the way a lot of promising young centre backs do, throwing himself at the first sign of danger instead of waiting for it to arrive. That instinct wins him plenty of ball, because forwards given no time on it rarely produce their best work. It also means he steps into challenges a more patient defender would simply avoid, trading certainty for urgency in the split second before contact.

He was sent off on his Championship debut for exactly that kind of impatience, a second bookable offence deep into a match he was otherwise controlling well. Young defenders either learn from moments like that or keep repeating them, and which path he takes will decide how far his career eventually goes. The raw material for a serious centre back is clearly there already, waiting on the discipline to catch up with it.
