Sepp van den Berg

Van den Berg spent several seasons out on loan before establishing himself, moving between English, German and Dutch football and picking up something different at each stop along the way. That apprenticeship shows in how comfortable he looks shifting between centre back and right back without his positioning ever appearing rushed or uncertain under pressure. He reads crosses well for a defender of his size, which usually means he attacks the ball rather than simply waiting for it to arrive.

The interesting part is what those loan years did to his attacking game. He arrived at Brentford with a habit of getting on the scoresheet from centre back, timing his run into the box from deep positions where markers tend to switch off. Whether that end product survives regular Premier League football, against defenders who now scout him properly, is worth watching closely.
