Alex Murphy, The Young Ball Playing Defender

He was trusted with senior minutes early, largely because of how calmly he passes his way out from the back.

Murphy made his senior debut before most defenders his age have even left academy football behind. The calmness he showed during that early exposure is what convinced Newcastle to bring him across from Ireland in the first place. He prefers to play out from the back rather than simply clear under pressure, trusting his passing range the way a much more experienced centre back usually would in the same situation.

He is also strong enough in the air to compete against senior forwards. That matters for a young defender who could easily be exposed physically before his body catches up with his reading of the game. The remaining question is simply games, since composure shown in short senior spells still needs testing over a much longer run of matches ahead.
