Connor O'Riordan, The Defender Loaned To Learn

A promising centre back whose international choice between three eligible nations settled on the Republic of Ireland.

O'Riordan came through Crewe's academy and signed for Blackburn on a lengthy four and a half year contract while still a teenager, a vote of confidence that came with an understanding his development would happen out on loan first, away from the club. Spells at Raith Rovers, Cambridge United and Doncaster Rovers exposed him to senior football in three separate leagues. Each one tested his defending against more physical, experienced opponents than academy football back home ever could.

Eligible to represent England, Scotland or Ireland, he chose to commit his international future to Ireland after previously training with Scotland's youth setup instead. That decision says something about where he genuinely feels he belongs as a player. The next step is turning those various loan spells into a real, lasting chance at Blackburn's own level.
