Harry Pickering, The Left Back Who Leads

A former Crewe captain whose leadership qualities followed him into a bigger dressing room at Blackburn.

Pickering learned his trade the hard way, working through Crewe's academy until he was trusted with the captain's armband there before he had turned twenty three. That responsibility still shapes how he plays, because he defends like someone who expects to be relied upon rather than covered for by others. He gets forward down the left with real intent, whipping in crosses and set pieces rather than simply supporting the width from deep.

The recurring theme has been hamstring trouble, which has interrupted him more than once just as he looked to be nailing down a regular starting place. When fit he barely misses a match, putting in a consistent shift down the left week after week. That pattern only makes the injury spells more frustrating for a manager trying to build a settled back line around him.
