Hayden Carter, The Defender Who Chips In

A Blackburn academy graduate whose loan spells produced an award winning goal alongside his usual defensive work.

Carter moved into Blackburn's youth setup from Manchester City as a teenager and needed loan spells at Burton Albion and Portsmouth to sharpen the physical side of his game against senior forwards. That period toughened his defending considerably, teaching him lessons academy football alone could not. He came back a more complete centre back, comfortable dealing with direct strikers who try to bully their way past him in the box.

What stands out is that he is not purely defensive, having scored a goal at Portsmouth memorable enough to win their supporters' goal of the season that year. Blackburn have rewarded that all round development with a long term contract stretching years into the future. The challenge from here is staying fit long enough to deliver on it across a full, demanding campaign.
