Scott Wharton, The Local Defender Who Stayed

A Blackburn born centre back who worked through four separate loan spells before establishing himself at his boyhood club.

Wharton is a genuine Blackburn product, born in the town and developed entirely through the academy before a string of loan spells in League Two toughened him up against senior strikers who gave him no space to work in. Those loans mattered more than a smooth academy rise would have. They forced him to defend in matches where a mistake actually cost his team points rather than just pride.

He has since become one of the more established defenders in the squad, using his height to dominate the penalty area at both ends of the pitch consistently. His younger brother's rise to the Premier League and international football has inevitably drawn comparisons between the two. The fair question is whether Scott can build an equally consistent career of his own, away from that shadow.
