Kristi Montgomery, The Midfielder Learning Fast

A Scotland qualified midfielder whose senior debut arrived only after a red card taught him an early lesson.

Montgomery worked his way up through Blackburn's academy over several years before loan spells at non league level gave him his first taste of senior football away from the comfort of youth matches. His breakthrough came off the bench as a substitute against senior opposition. Days later he was thrown into a start that ended early when he picked up a second yellow card, a harsh introduction to senior football.

Despite being born in England, he qualifies for Scotland through his mother and has already featured for their under twenty one side during qualifying matches. That is a clear sign his talent is being noticed well beyond Blackburn. The challenge from here is turning occasional involvement into a settled run in midfield, learning from that early red card rather than repeating the mistake.
