Axel Henriksson, The Midfielder Sweden Loved First

A crowd favourite through two Swedish promotions whose no nonsense midfield play earned him a move to England.

Henriksson built his reputation the hard way in Swedish football, helping GAIS climb two divisions in consecutive seasons through consistent, hard working performances in central midfield rather than any single standout display. Supporters there took to him quickly, making him a genuine crowd favourite at the club. He became the kind of player a smaller club builds its identity around, doing the unglamorous side of midfield so others further forward can attack freely.

He has managed all of that while living with Crohn's disease, a condition that adds a layer of difficulty most opponents never have to think about during a match. Blackburn have committed to him with a long contract running several years into the future. The question now is whether his old school midfield style, so effective in Sweden, translates just as well against Championship pace.
