Micky van de Ven, The Defender Speed Insures

Van de Ven turns what should be a clear scoring chance into a routine sprint most defenders could not make.

Van de Ven's recovery pace changes what Tottenham can risk defensively. A high line that would expose most teams to a straightforward run in behind becomes far less dangerous when he can simply outrun the situation back to safety. He uses that speed aggressively rather than only in retreat, stepping out to intercept a pass early because he knows a failed attempt still leaves him fast enough to recover. His reading of the game has developed alongside that physical gift, positioning himself better than he needed to when pace alone used to cover for the occasional lapse.

The tension is what happens as that recovery speed inevitably narrows over time, since a defender built so heavily around one physical advantage eventually has to lean more on positioning instead.
