Mateus Fernandes, The Midfielder Who Does Both Jobs

Fernandes wins the ball back through hard running and then uses his technique to turn that moment into attack.

Fernandes takes possession under pressure with genuine confidence. He manipulates his body to open up a passing angle a defender thought he had already closed off. His passing range covers both the incisive through ball into a forward and the longer switch that shifts an entire attack to the opposite flank, and he chooses between them without hesitation. That creative side is matched by a defensive appetite that stands out in a young player, closing down opponents and winning the ball back high up the pitch rather than waiting for it to come to him.
