Djed Spence, The Full Back Built On Pace

Spence covers ground so quickly that mistakes in positioning rarely turn into the disaster they would for a slower defender.

Spence's most obvious quality is speed, and it shows up as much in defence as it does when he bombs forward down the flank. A poor first step can be corrected almost instantly by simply outrunning the problem. That athleticism lets him play a genuinely attacking role, overlapping a winger and getting into crossing positions a more conservative full back would think twice about. He is direct in possession too, preferring to drive past an opponent rather than looking for the easy pass sideways.

The tension is refining the decision making that comes with that pace, because raw speed only papers over a mistimed challenge for so long. Tottenham fans have watched his confidence grow gradually.
