Cristian Romero, The Defender Who Never Backs Down

Romero fights for every ball as though losing it would be a personal failure, not a normal part of defending.

Romero defends with an intensity that sits right on the edge of reckless. He meets a forward's first touch with a challenge rather than backing off to think it through first. That aggression wins him a huge number of individual battles, since strikers quickly learn that any hesitation in front of him gets punished right away. He also organises the players around him with his voice, treating defending as a job for the whole back line, even while personally chasing down every loose ball within reach.

The tension is obvious and Tottenham fans argue about it constantly, because that same edge occasionally tips into a rash challenge in a dangerous area or an unnecessary card. Taming that edge without losing the aggression that makes him effective in the first place is the balance every manager he plays for has had to find.
