Jorge Cuenca, A Left Sided Defender In Reserve

The Spaniard arrived with a proper La Liga record behind him and has waited for opportunities in England.

Cuenca came through at Barcelona before building a genuine La Liga career, first on loan at Almería and Getafe and then as a regular for Villarreal. He is a left sided centre back by trade, which is a specific and valuable thing to have in a squad, because a defence containing only right footers narrows the angles available when a team plays out. He has also covered at left back whenever that has been required.

The awkward truth is that Fulham signed him into a position where the established pairing rarely misses matches. Depth defenders are judged on a handful of appearances rather than on anything cumulative, which is a difficult way for anybody to be assessed fairly. Watch him during cup ties and after an injury, because those are the windows where his case gets made.
