Bernd Leno, The Save That Wins A Point

Fulham's goalkeeper turns matches on single moments of reaction, which is why the margins so often fall their way.

Leno is at his best in the situations most goalkeepers dread, the shot struck from inside the area with almost no time to set his feet properly. He gets down quickly for a powerful man, keeps his hands solid behind the ball, and holds on to efforts that others would push back into a crowded six yard box. His positioning before the strike is the part worth watching, because he consistently arrives balanced rather than sprawling.

The argument around him has always concerned what happens when the ball travels into his penalty area rather than directly at his goal. Crosses ask a completely different question of a goalkeeper, one about timing and physical courage instead of pure reaction, and Leno has never really been the type who claims everything above his head. Fulham defend those moments together as a unit for exactly that reason.
