Antonee Robinson, Pure Speed Down The Left

The American full back beats opponents with acceleration rather than trickery, and he never stops making the run.

Robinson is one of the quickest defenders in England and he uses that pace in the least complicated way possible, sprinting past his own winger on the outside and reaching the byline. Once there he pulls the ball back low and hard across the six yard box rather than floating something hopeful towards a centre forward. Defensively the same pace works as a genuine safety net, letting him recover positions a slower full back would simply concede.

The argument about him concerns the moments when a match genuinely becomes slow rather than fast. Against a deep defensive block there is no space to run into, which asks him to beat a defender in a phone box or deliver from a standing start, and that is not naturally his strongest attribute. Watch whether he stays wide and high or comes inside to combine instead.
