Calvin Bassey, Defending At Full Speed

The Nigeria defender turns broken situations into safe ones with pace that most centre backs simply do not have.

Bassey converted from left back into the middle of a defence, which explains why he is so comfortable turning and running towards his own goal at full pace. Attacks that break behind Fulham do not automatically become chances, because he eats up the gap and arrives shoulder to shoulder with the striker rather than sliding in from behind. On the ball he steps forward into midfield with it, forcing an opponent to leave a marker.

The tension is that the same instincts occasionally take him further from his position than a centre back should ever go. He steps out to intercept and, when the pass is disguised well, that leaves a hole somebody else has to fill in a hurry. Supporters argue about whether the risk is worth carrying, though almost everything valuable he does begins with the same willingness.
