Benjamin Lecomte, The Experienced Understudy

The Frenchman brings a long career in his own country's top division to a competitive goalkeeping department.

Lecomte spent the bulk of his career in France, establishing himself at Lorient and then Montpellier before a move to Monaco and a later spell in Spain. Analysts who watched him closely describe quick reflexes and a strong low diving position, along with a willingness to claim crosses properly instead of punching everything clear. He distributes well with both the long pass and a fast throw that starts a break.

A second goalkeeper holds the strangest job in football, because the work gets judged on a handful of appearances spread months apart. Lecomte has been an understudy before, sitting behind one of the finest goalkeepers in Europe at Atlético Madrid, so the psychology of the role will not surprise him. Watch him in cup competitions, because that is where a reserve keeper reassures a dressing room.
