César Palacios, Life Between The Lines

The Spain youth international was brought to Fulham to receive in the spaces that break a defensive block.

Palacios grew up in the Real Madrid academy as an attacking midfielder, and everything about his game points towards the final third rather than the base of a midfield. He takes the ball on the half turn under pressure, which is the skill separating a genuine creator from a player who only ever passes the way he is already facing. He scored freely for Spain at youth level, so the late runs into the area are instinctive.

Whether any of this translates is the whole story of his Fulham career. Reserve football in Spain rewards technique and composure, while a Premier League midfield is decided by how quickly a player makes the same decision with a defender arriving behind him. He joined a coach who knows his game intimately, which buys the patience most young imports never receive.
