Sam Tickle, The Keeper Who Outgrew League One

Bristol City have signed a goalkeeper his own manager once rated the best shot stopper outside the top two divisions.

Tickle built his name the unglamorous way, working through Wigan Athletic's academy for years before finally winning a settled run between the posts. He became the first goalkeeper in over a decade to win his own club's player of the season award. A place in the division's official team of the season followed soon after that, and an England youth call up confirmed the wider attention.

The question now is whether it all translates a division higher, because Championship forwards test a goalkeeper differently to League One ones. Bristol City are betting his reading of the game holds up without much of a bedding in period. Watch how quickly he starts commanding crosses in a league that swings the ball into the box far more often than the one he has left.
