Rob Dickie, The Defender Who Fits Any System

A versatile defender whose ball playing quality has earned individual awards at more than one previous club.

Dickie made his name doing a bit of everything across a back line, filling in at right back, in the middle, or on the right of three. That adaptability came with real composure on the ball, the sort that earned him a team of the season place and a supporters' player of the year award at an earlier club. He has also picked up a goal of the season award, proof his passing range occasionally produces something spectacular.

Versatility this complete raises an obvious question about his best position, because being useful everywhere can mean never being the first name on a teamsheet anywhere. Bristol City have used that flexibility to their advantage anyway, rewarding him with a lengthy contract extension. Where he lines up week to week says more about the system than about any weakness in his own game.
