Jason Knight, The Midfielder Who Plays Anywhere

An Irish international who captained his previous club and has since been trusted in multiple positions across midfield.

Knight was captaining a Championship side before he turned twenty three, which says a great deal about the respect he commanded well before most players his age even establish themselves. His old manager once called him a joy to watch after an influential performance, praise that reflects both his energy and his willingness to do the unglamorous running that lets teammates shine. He has been deployed as a right wing back as often as through central midfield, adapting his game rather than insisting on one fixed role.

That versatility is also the argument against him, because a player asked to do everything sometimes ends up defined by no single specialism. Bristol City brought him in expecting the energy and leadership to travel regardless of where he lines up. How he is used this season, wide or central, says as much about the plan as it does about Knight himself.
