Cameron Pring, The Left Back Who Had To Wait

A homegrown full back whose path to a regular first team place ran through four separate loan spells.

Pring spent years being farmed out to clubs well below the Championship before Bristol City finally handed him the shirt, and that apprenticeship shows in how rarely he looks rattled by a difficult afternoon now. He pushes forward early rather than waiting to be asked, which gives the winger ahead of him an outlet and stretches a defence sitting narrow against the ball. Supporters once voted him their player of the month, a rare honour for a full back rather than a goalscorer.

The trade off is exposure at the other end, because a full back who commits so readily to the overlap leaves space behind for a sharp opponent to exploit. Bristol City have generally judged that trade worth making, extending his contract rather than looking elsewhere for the role. Whether the balance holds against the division's quickest wingers remains the argument that follows him.
