Thomas came through a well regarded academy where he won youth cups and a league title. Senior football finally arrived through a series of loan spells lower down the pyramid. A clean sheet on his professional debut set the tone for a solid, unspectacular career built on consistency, the kind of reliability clubs value even when it rarely makes headlines. He signed for Bristol City specifically as injury cover, and the club have kept extending his contract ever since despite barely using him in the league.
