George Tanner, The Full Back Who Used To Attack

A defender who began his career as a forward, a switch that still shapes how eagerly he attacks now.

Tanner started out further up the pitch before a switch to the flank unlocked the career that followed, working his way up from non league football after his release by a Premier League academy as a teenager. That forward's grounding still shows in how naturally he arrives in the final third, an attacking instinct a lifelong defender rarely possesses in quite the same way. He has become a fixture in the Championship since, rewarded with a lengthy new contract for his consistency.

The trade off with any converted forward playing full back is positioning at the other end, because the instincts that help him going forward are not always the ones that keep a defence organised. Bristol City clearly judge the attacking threat worth the occasional lapse. Watch how often he ends up in the opposition box rather than simply overlapping from deep.
