Imran Louza, The Captain Who Chose Morocco

Watford's captain turned down France for Morocco and now dictates matches from midfield with a genuinely dangerous free kick.

Louza runs games from deep rather than from the final third, the sort of midfielder who wants the ball constantly and rarely wastes a pass once he has it. He is trusted enough to wear the captain's armband, which says as much about his standing in the dressing room as anything he does with the ball, and he carries genuine set piece quality, capable of curling a free kick into the top corner from range rather than simply floating it into the box.

A serious leg injury cost him a huge chunk of his career at exactly the point he was breaking through internationally, and the question that still lingers is how much of his old range he has actually got back. Choosing Morocco over the country of his birth also tells you something about identity that goes beyond football. Watch how often he pushes forward into the box himself these days, because that willingness to arrive late is usually the clearest sign a midfielder trusts his body again.
