Kevin Keben, The Centre Back Built In France

A French trained defender who left home as a toddler and still plays with the calm on the ball a technical academy system instils early.

Keben left Cameroon as a small child and grew up entirely inside French football, joining a Ligue 1 academy where centre backs are taught to play out under pressure rather than just clear their lines. That habit has followed him into the Championship, where he looks for a pass through midfield before reaching for the long ball, and he defends on the front foot, stepping into passing lanes rather than waiting for a striker to get a shot away.

The tension for a defender raised this way is whether that comfort on the ball survives a league that punishes hesitation far more than technical error. English forwards close down centre backs quicker and more aggressively than most opponents he grew up facing in France.
