Jeremy Ngakia, The Full Back Who Walked Away

He left a Premier League academy as a free agent on principle before rebuilding an entire career in the Championship at right back.

Ngakia came through a big London academy and made his top flight debut as a teenager, the kind of start that usually leads clubs to lock a player down on a long contract. Instead he let his deal run out and moved on for nothing, choosing to bet on himself over security. At right back he leans on recovery speed rather than bulk, happy to get tight to a winger and show him inside because he trusts himself to get back if the first challenge fails.

That decision to leave as a free agent still shapes how people talk about him, because it takes real self belief for a young defender to turn down a bigger club's terms. Committing to a long stay at a smaller club afterwards suggests he found the trust he was looking for the first time round. Watch how far forward he pushes when the team is in possession, since that overlapping run is usually the clearest sign he feels settled again.
