Othmane Maamma, The Winger Who Won A World Cup

A teenage dribbler who was named the outstanding player at an Under 20 World Cup his country won on home advantage of belief alone.

Maamma plays with the confidence of a winger who trusts his first touch more than his end product, happy to attempt a dribble in a tight space that a more cautious player would simply pass around. He broke into a Ligue 1 first team as a teenager and became one of his boyhood club's youngest ever goalscorers, evidence that the end product is developing alongside the flair rather than lagging behind it.

The individual award he picked up helping Morocco win an Under 20 World Cup is the kind of achievement that raises expectations far beyond what a young winger has actually proven at senior club level. International youth tournaments reward exactly the kind of one on one ability he has in abundance, but senior football gives him far less space to work with. Watch whether he starts picking his moments to dribble rather than trying it every time the ball reaches him, because that selectivity is usually the next stage of a winger's development.
