Jack Grieves, An Academy Kid With Family Ties

A homegrown midfielder from a multi generation footballing family who scored his first senior goal in a major cup tie.

Grieves grew up inside a football family stretching back generations, with a father, an uncle and great grandparents who all played the professional game before him, so the demands of an academy environment were never a total mystery. He was released by his own club as a young teenager before working his way back in, and that setback seems to have sharpened rather than dented his appetite, shown by the composure to score his first senior goal in a major cup tie rather than a quiet reserve fixture.

The question for any academy graduate with a story this good is whether the family name creates expectations that a normal upbringing simply would not, fairly or not. A loan spell away from home was clearly judged necessary to test him outside the comfort of a familiar dressing room.
