Abdoulaye Kanté, The Midfielder Who Screens The Defence

A defensive midfielder who reads passes early and steps into the lane, breaking up attacks before they can properly develop.

Kanté positions himself between the opposition's midfield and his own back four, cutting off the easiest route forward and forcing attacks wide into areas that are simpler for his team mates to defend. His tackling is timed rather than rushed. He chooses the moment to engage instead of diving into challenges that leave gaps behind him if they fail.
