Ra'ees Bangura-Williams, The Playmaker Nearly Missed

A creative attacking midfielder whose non league beginnings, after top academies passed on him, only sharpened his hunger.

Bangura-Williams looks to unlock a defence with the final pass rather than simply keeping possession. He picks out runs that team-mates have only just started making. He plays with genuine flair, willing to attempt the pass a more cautious midfielder would rule out before it even reaches his feet.

His route into the professional game ran through non league football after some of the country's biggest academies decided he was not ready, a rejection that clearly did nothing to dent his self belief. The question is whether that attacking instinct is matched by enough defensive discipline to hold down a regular place in a competitive Championship midfield. Watch how his manager balances his creativity against the team's defensive shape, because that balancing act tends to decide how much freedom an inventive young midfielder actually gets.
